Members organise each outing. To keep costs down, public transport is used as much as possible. Visits include local, coastal and city venues.
The Galleries and Museums group's May outing was to Greenwich. Starting off with a trip down the Thames on the Uber boat, the day was spent at the Old Royal Naval College which is a UNCESCO world heritage site with over 600 years of rich history. The highlight was visiting the beautiful Painted Hall which features over 200 characters on its opulent ceiling. We also visited the Chapel and exhibition at the Visitor's Centre. The day concluded with a lovely lunch at The Old Brewery and a wander around the wonderful grounds with beautiful river views.
The Galleries and Museums’ April trip was to see the Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
The exhibition takes viewers on a journey through the artists life and practice. Charting her artistic journey from creating woodcut prints to paintings with a realist quality, this exhibition offers a glimpse of post war Britain through the eyes of a multi-talented artist with a bewitching imagination.
Tirzah Garwood (1908-1951) was married to Eric Ravilious and whilst Garwood was a standalone artist, Ravilious had a profound impact on her craft. Garwood attended night school at Eastbourne School of Art before eventually enrolling as a full time student where Ravilious was teaching at the school.
An artist of many talents, Garwood started out as a wood engraver and then went on to experiment with paper marbling. Two of her marbled works were acquired by the V&A and remain in the collection today.
Her prized possession was a Victorian Dolls house and during her thirties she turned to mixed media works, creating whimsical and magical dioramas of domestic and public settings.
Alongside wood engraving, collage, marbling and more, Garwood was also an exceptional painter.
